Kim propped her bare feet up on the porch railing. She’d taken a shower and changed into cutoff overalls and a tank top. Luke would be there anytime, and tonight they were turning Buster and Sparky back into the pasture with the cattle. Luke had spotted a coyote on his property, and the donkeys would protect the calves from coyotes.
She heard a vehicle and was about to stand up when it pulled up into the yard. It wasn’t Luke’s truck, and she didn’t recognize the car. Maybe Edith or Virgie had gotten a new vehicle and come to show it off to Hannah. She shaded her face with her hand and could scarcely believe her eyes.
“Holy crap! What is Grandpa doing in Emet, Oklahoma?”
“Kim?” His eyes went from her bare feet to the braids hanging down to her shoulders.
“Grandpa? What are you doing here?”
His nose curled. “I came to talk to your grandmother.”
“Hey, Grandma!” Kim yelled at the top of her lungs.
Karen poked her head out the front door and Daniel’s nose did a full snarl. Karen wore denim shorts, a knit shirt, and flip-flops. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail and she didn’t have a drop of makeup on. She’d been working in cucumbers all day, making various kinds of pickles, so Eau de Vinegar wafted out from her.
Daniel sneezed. “My God, woman, what happened to you?”
“You did,” she said.
“Can we talk privately?”
Karen stepped out on the porch. “No, but we can talk in front of Kim. I’d offer you something to drink, but you won’t be here that long.”
“Hello, Daddy.” Sue came around the end of the house. “What brings you out slumming?”
Hannah followed her. “Daniel?”
Daniel leaned against the car. “You have all gone crazy. This isn’t you, Karen. How do you live in this heat? And why do you live in this hovel?”
He ran a finger around the inside of his white shirt collar, pulled a monogrammed handkerchief from the pocket of his jacket, and wiped his hand.
“Karen, I’ve got to talk to you, and I’d rather it be private…please?”
She sat down in one of the rocking chairs. “I’ve found my mind, and you get used to the heat. The house is smaller than the one I’ve got up for sale in Virginia, but it’s home. And say what you’ve got to say. I’m listening.”
“I want to just talk to you, not the whole family.”
“Too bad. Whatever you’ve got to say will be said in front of all of us, or else you can get in your rental and drive back to the airport. Your choice,” Karen said.
“Tiffany know you are here with your wife?” Kim asked.
“Yes, she does. She realizes we are going to have to get this business over. She trusts me. I wouldn’t betray that,” he said.
“Well, ain’t that nice. You’ve finally changed in your old age,” Karen said.
Daniel ran his fingers through his hair. “I don’t want to fight. I want the winery. I want the label and all of it. Tiffany does not want the house.
